A China-made drone was discovered inside the high-security Bhopal Central Jail on Wednesday, sparking an investigation. Jail Superintendent Rakesh Kumar Bangre stated that a guard near the B-block building spotted the black drone, weighing 30-40 grams, between 3:30 and 4:00 pm. The drone, fully charged, was found lying inside the premises, though no one witnessed its landing.
Bangre suggested that the unmanned device might belong to children playing near the prison. The jail, spread over 151 acres, accommodates 3,600 inmates, exceeding its 2,600 capacity. Among them are 69 high-security prisoners, including 32 linked to the banned Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
The drone has been handed over to Gandhi Nagar police for further investigation. Notably, the Bhopal Central Jail was in the spotlight in 2016 when eight SIMI-linked undertrials killed a guard and escaped. They were later killed in a police encounter on the outskirts of Bhopal.
