'108 Ambulances have no employee as helper'

SHILLONG, May 11: In light of subsequent media reports that followed the tragic accident of the 108 ambulance in which two persons lost their lives on May 10, the Marketing and Media Relation GVK EMRI, Meghalaya Paia Mukhim on Thursday clarified that 108 Ambulances have no employee by the term ‘helper’.

Mukhim clarified that the occupants in the ambulance were Teiborlang Lyngdoh, Emergency Medical Technicians (Paramedic) who had been with GVK EMRI 108 for the past 9 Years and the second occupant was Pilot Pyrshangbor  Marwein (Ambulance Driver) pilot of GVK EMRI 108 serving with the organization for the last 7 months.

“He (Lyngdoh) was one of the best trained and dedicated employee of GVK EMRI 108 and he had served in the districts of West Khasi Hill, West Garo Hills, Ri Bhoi and East Khasi Hills handling a total of 2600 plus emergencies which consist of 1000 plus pregncy related emergencies, 324 trauma emergencies, 65 cardiac emergencies among others,” he said.

Mukhim informed that Marwein was based out of Mairang and had handled more than 125 emergencies in this short period.

He informed that all 108 ambulances are fitted with GPS and alerts are received and recorded when ambulances cross 50 Km per hour.

“No such alert was received in this case. Also as a safety measure all 108 ambulances have a speed lock at 70 Km per hour that prevents ambulances from crossing the prescribed speed limit,” he said.

According to sources at the hospital, the prelimiry post mortem report states that the cause of death was traumatic injury to the head and chest for both the victims.

He further informed that the toxicology report is awaited as it has been sent to the laboratory for further test.

Mukhim said the entire GVK EMRI Family is saddened at this tragic loss not only for the family and GVK EMRI but also to the state as we have lost trained personnel who could handle emergencies at any given point of time. The GVK EMRI family has further expressed its gratitude and respects to the departed souls for serving the society in saving lives.
