SILCHAR, Aug 16: It was a long journey for Women’s College of Silchar to reach the height of success. On its eventfuloccasion of the 53rd Foundation Day held in the Bhagini Nibadita Sabhagriha on Friday, Arundhati Bhattacharjee, convener, souvenir publication subcommittee, recalled the contributions of all those who in their own way had contributed towards the growth and development of this premier institution of girls. She paid her highest regards to them, past and present.
Describing the day as glorious, Dr. Manoj Kumar Paul, principal, said it was on August 1, 1963 that this college began its journey almost from a scratch. Today, it has taken a big leap forward with sound foundation. The temple of learning carries ahead the beacon light of knowledge. Dr. Paul said besides having Arts and Commerce streams, the college has also introduced vocatiol courses. Speaking about the future plan, he revealed the priority is for opening Science stream, a women study centre, innovative courses and employment oriented subjects.
The principal has also, as he pointed out, initiated move for campus recruitment facility for which some private and public sector companies have been moved. With all these efforts, Dr. Manoj Kumar Paul was confident of giving a new direction and dimension to women education. It was the occasion to release the golden jubilee souvenir by Prof. Somth Dasgupta, Vice-Chancellor of Assam University. Simultaneously, a news letter of the college was also released by the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, S Viswathan, IAS.
Prof. Somth Dasgupta speaking as the chief-guest said it was the performance of students that go to make an institution of distinction. He added to say the achievements of this college “are no mean which has come to this height of glory overcoming all hurdles and obstacles”. He was sure looking back could not but make all happy. It was a milestone of development and progress, both in terms of quality and achievement. Prof. Dasgupta laid stress on elevating the standard and creating bondage between teachers and students.
S Viswathan, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, expressed his happiness to be a part of this celebration and saluted those who initiated this institution for girls. He remembered Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam who always had a vision to see that the education for women received equal importance. He continues to ignite our mind. His book Wings of Fire is worth reading and emulating. He advised the students to ignite their minds to face their next phase of life after completing their education with all passion and zeal.
Samar Kanti Roy Choudhury, governing body president, said how difficult it had been to initiate steps for the establishment of a college that too for girls in this remote part of the country. He also remembered all those who left no stone unturned to begin the college and take it to the pincle of success. The celebration ceremony was held in the auditorium of the college which was packed with invited guests, teachers and students.
