GAURISAGAR, April 18: “Nature must be preserved to keep the world healthy. A country can be saved through green environment. So we all must plant trees. If trees are alive then men will remain alive in the world,” stated Padmashree awardee and Forest Man Jadav Payeng while delivering his speech as a distinguished guest in the open session of the alumni meet of the Economics Department of Dikhowmukh College held recently on the outskirts of Gaurisagar in Sivasagar district.

Addressing the gathering, Payeng also urged people to plant saplings to reduce global warming. He urged students to focus on getting practical education rather than obtaining degrees. At the same time, he urged upon the State Education Department to introduce environment education as a selective subject in higher educational institutes of Assam.

The meeting started with a chorus performed by the students of the college. Dr Lutfun  Nahar, Principal of the college, inaugurated the alumni meet. Sandhikshan, the mouthpiece published on the occasion and edited by Romen Kalita was unveiled by Bireswar Neog, former Vice-Principal, Jhanji HNS College. After the meet, an interaction programme was held among the department alumni where they performed songs, recited poems and narrated their experience and memories of the years spent in the college.
