MANGALDAI, December 27:  “We were of Assam, we are of Assam and we shall be of Assam and no one can separate us from Assam. If the BJP-led government in the Centre and in the State fail to realize this, one crore people belonging to the religious minority community living in the State will be compelled to come out on the streets. This is our land and we are Assamese. We will never allow any force to interfere with our birthright,” declared the office bearers of All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) while taking part in a mass rally organized at the Rajiv Gandhi Mini Stadium at Kharupetia in Darrang district on Tuesday.

The AAMSU organized the rally to lodge protest against the inhuman and illegal eviction drive conducted by the district administration of Darrang at Phuhuratoli PGR under Sipajhar Revenue Circle area on December 21.  Significantly, in an overwhelming response to the AAMSU, several thousands of people coming from far-flung areas of the district, including the char areas and Phuhuratoli area took part in the rally. The AAMSU leaders in the rally strongly criticized and condemned the alleged commul and partial attitude of the BJP government towards the religious minority community people living peacefully, mostly in char areas despite facing toughest situation due to flood and erosion since quite a long.

“If the religious minority community people living in the char areas are illegal migrants or foreigners, it is the duty and responsibility of the government to identify and detect and to deport as per the provisions of the law. Further, if these people are not identified as illegal migrants or foreigners, then government should made arrangements for rehabilitation and compensation before conducting any eviction drive as they are erosion-affected villagers,” said AAMSU general secretary Ainuddin Ahmed while addressing the rally. In the rally presided over by AASMSU president Azizur Rahman, general secretary of AAMSU, Rezaul Karim Sarkar, secretary Abdur Rahim Biswas and Rejibur Rahman also strongly opposed the government’s move to evict the erosion-affected people in the me of eviction drive conducted in the light of the order passed by the Supreme Court of India.

The AAMSU later also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner demanding to stop the biased eviction drive with commul attitude, to publish a white paper on the encroachment of land under VGR, PGR and forest cover, to make settlement of land to the flood and erosion-affected villagers and to sanction compensation with rehabilitation to the evicted villagers of Kaziranga, Mayong and Sipajhar.
