BISWATH CHARIALI, March 15: The Biswath Chariali unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has opposed the proposed sharp hike in land revenue and urged to lower the hike to five per cent of the present revenue.

In a memorandum submitted to the Commissioner of Lower Assam, Tezpur, the students’ body observed that the poor people as well as farmers would not be able to pay such a huge amount as revenue which is beyond their capacity.  It may be mentioned that the State Revenue Department has proposed a sharp hike in all types of land revenue collected in the State according to Section 11(A) of Assam Land Revenue Act of 1936.

The Department has proposed to hike the revenue of commercial land to Rs 750 from Rs 500, residential land from Rs 300 to Rs 450 in urban areas while in rural areas, the hike is from Rs 5 to Rs 150 in case of paddy fields, from Rs 22 to Rs 660 in case of tea gardens, from Rs 500 to Rs 750 in case of industrial areas like brick kilns, among others.
