GUWAHATI, Nov 19: The 13th & 14th Amala Bezboruah Memorial Award was presented to Shilpa Das and Jumi Bharali, who were students of the Mathematics Department of the Gauhati University, for the year 2014 and 2015 respectively. Both had secured the highest marks in the combined two semesters of the relevant 5th year of their studentship at the university. The award presentation ceremony was held at the Mathematics Department of the Gauhati University today, in the presence of the faculty members Dr. Kuntala Patra, Dr.Reeta Choudhury, Dr. Hemen Dutta, Dr Homen Debth, Dr.Nilakhi Goswami, Dr. Konika Das, Dr.Debashish Bhattacharya and the students of the Mathematics department of the university.
Also present were Dr.K.C.Choudhury and Dr. Bhaben Kalita, Emeritus Professors of the University.
Dr. Helen Saikia, Head, of the department presided over the meeting. Dr. H.P.Sarma, the Rector of the University was the chief guest. S.N.Phukan, Maging Trustee of the Kamala Bezboruah Memorial Trust and Dhirendra th Bezboruah, former editor of The Sentil and brother of Amala Bezboruah were also present.
The meeting commenced with the university song, sung by the students, followed by lighting of the lamp and offerings of flowers in the memory of Amala Bezboruah. A few short speeches were made, recalling the qualities of head and heart of Late Amala Bezboruah. Thereafter, each of the awardees were presented with a citation and a cheque for Rs 10,000 from the Kamala Bezboruah Memorial Trust, by Satyen Phukan, the Maging Trustee of the Trust
Dr. Jiten Kalita, Professor of the IIT gave a lecture on alytical and numerical studies in the field of mathematical modeling, which was of particular interest for the students present in the meeting.
