Dibrugarh, May 16: Paving the way for women empowerment through the bludgeon of education, the second women science college of Assam, the first being Devi Charan Borua Girls’ Science College of Jorhat, will be opened in Dibrugarh under the pennt of Manohari Devi Kanoi Girls’ College (MDKG) on June 6.
Couched as the second institutiol premise of MDKG College, Principal Dr Dilip Kumar Bhuyan, speaking at a meeting held recently, deliberated that for construction of the building of the women science college, the authorities of MDKG College had been fortute enough in acquiring separate land at Khalihamari in 2011. Speaking further, Dr Bhuyan stated that undoubtedly the most assertive and long-term initiative of the college authorities was the construction of the boundary walls and main building which commenced from July, 2014.
Later, addressing the meeting, the Vice-Principal of the college, Umesh Chandra Saharia and Associate Professor Dibakar Sarmah, said that at present classes in the new MDKG Science College would begin with Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany, Geography, Home Science, Statistics and Computer Science, as degree subjects out of which Mathematics, Zoology, Botany, Economics, Geography and Home Science would be taught as Major subjects.
The five-storey MDKG Science College building, constructed from grants received from Assam Government, has been built with state-of-the-art information technology laboratory. Moreover, the science college building will be equipped with laboratories for various subjects, a big conference hall, girls’ common room in the fifth floor, car parking area, lift facility, CCTV cameras for proper vigilance, generators to meet the trouble of constant power cuts for disabled persons, specific arrangements for specially-abled persons, a separate tube well and a pump machine for meeting fire crisis. Digitalization of the present library and setting up of a fully digitalized library, have been incorporated under the next phase of the college’s development work.
Moreover, for the first time system of online admission to all the aforesaid science degree courses have been initiated where students could now complete their college education under a single institutiol crown. Meanwhile, approval for initiation of classes in the women science college is awaited from the authorities of Dibrugarh University, who had recently carried out inspection of the college.
The administration of Manohari Devi Girls’ College, with hopes of beginning a new chapter in the sphere of girl education, have urged for the cooperation of one and all for achieving new feats of conquests in the area of science learning.
The MDKG Arts institution, that celebrated its golden jubilee, in 2013, had succeeded in scoring as a platform of social and cultural brilliance. The college had 14 subject departments, with 12 additiol subjects at degree level except for Bengali and Hindi. The two-time AC accredited college, was granted B++ grade in 2004 and with 2.9 points was awarded B grade in 2011. Attempting for elevating the success ratio of pass percentage, the students of the college constantly have outshined in the examitions held under Dibrugarh University. For example, under the preceding degree semester examition, the pass percentage was 88 per cent, out of which 174 girl students had achieved first class position.
Students of the college have even brought glories to their institution by participating in tiol level competitions. The achievement of Swap Borua who earned a gold medal in the recently held Intertiol Kickboxing event at Bangkok and the selection of Aradha Buragohain to the top 10 contestants of Femi Miss India beauty pageant, 2016, made the college proud of their accomplishments. Another feather was added to the academy’s cap when the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Government of India, awarded a scholarship to Pooja Das, for Xattriya dance learning.
