Haflong, Jan 13: The NC Hills Indigenous Students’ Forum would take every possible step to defeat the Congress government if their demand for a separate autonomous district is not fulfilled, said NCHISF president Devid Keivom in press meet at Haflong today.
Keivom stated that, in the back-drop of the forcible change of nomenclature of the N.C. Hills District into Dima Hasao on March 1, 2010 after the dialect of a mere simple majority community, the Dimasas, the Indigenous Peoples Forum (IPF) have been demanding for bifurcation of the district with Separate Autonomous Councils.
After a series of agitation programs from the IPF, the Task Force headed by P.P. Verma, the then Addl. Chief Secretary, Presently Adviser to Chief Minister was constituted to examine the demand of the IPF and has submitted its report way back on November 16, 2011.
The Task Force in its report recommended for creation of Separate, Independent Autonomous District Councils for both the Non-Dimasa and the Dimasas under Article 24-4 (2) and 275 (1) of the sixth schedule.
The state government created five districts— Biswath, Charaideo, Hojai , South Salmara Mankachar and West Karbi-Anglong on last Independence Day while IPF demand was kept aside. However, the Government still ignored the demand of the indigenous people of N.C Hills recently when Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi made New Year announcement for the people of Assam.
