SILCHAR, April 6: A multi-tribal Easter commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his ascension to haven was celebrated with all serenity and solemnity with the participation of devout Christians belonging to different tribes by 22 sector Assam Rifles based at Haflong and across south Assam. Haflong Garrison organized an Easter Mass conducted by Father Sebastian Ishoray of Don Bosco Church, Haflong and Pastors of Fiengpui and Muolhoi Protestant Churches. The Mass was attended by sisters of St Agnes School, Choirs of Fiengpui, Muolhoi and Don Bosco Churches and also of 43 Assam Rifles. Baptists and Orthodox Christians, and people and soldiers of other tribes and faiths also joined in the celebrations.

After the Mass, the DIG requested all Easter people to volunteer to revive Haflong Lake with the slogan ‘Humlukun Ka Jaan, Humlukun Ka Lake’. It is an initiative of ‘Batch 1993 Haflongites’. Besides, these celebrations in Haflong Garrison, soldiers of the Assam Rifles visited nearly all churches of south Assam to greet people on Easter with gifts and good wishes. All company battalions also held mall Easter prayers for local people and soldiers, followed by feasts. Truly, it was a celebration of Easter in the spirit of resurrection of Jesus Christ and of ‘Friends of the Hill People’.

Easter or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by Romans at Calvary. It is the culmition of the Passion of Christ, preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and pence.

Understanding the true meaning of Easter is very important. Easter is about one person. This person was human, but he did what no other human has ever done. He did everything right. He never did anything wrong. He never sinned. This human is the answer to every other human’s need. He is the most significant person in history. That is why we measure time as B.C. (before Christ) and A.D. (Latin for “year of our Lord”). Easter presents an opportunity for eterl joy!
