SHILLONG, Dec 20: Bansara Eye Care Centre (BECC) along with Meghalaya Blindness Control Society recently declared eight villages under Shella-Bholaganj block as Avoidable Blindness Free Villages.
A total of 70 cataract patients were treated in the eight villages that include Majai, Dhoram Basti, Chakla Basti, ya Basti, Umdud, Khahumrin, Ichamati, Umtaroo under Shella-Bholaganj block.
The Asha’s Workers from Ichamati CHC supported by a project team headed by Juban Thangkhiew, senior Outreach Coorditor of Bansara Eye Hospital involved in conducting group meetings, survey, screening camp and treatment.
To declare these eight villages as Avoidable Blindness Free Villages it took one year to the project team to achieve the goal in which the Heads of eight villages.
Director Medical & Health officer of East Khasi Hills district, Dr S S Dohling declared these villages to be “Avoidable Blindness Free Villages” and also iugurated the “Avoidable Blindness Board” at Majai Village.
After the iugural function, a short programme was held at Ichamati CHC which was attended by DM&HO of EKHD as chief guest.
He spoke about the importance of the eyes and also appreciated the project taken up by Bansara Eye Care Centre along with the support from the Meghalaya Blindness Control Society.
Two representatives from the patients also spoke on the occasion.
