End of an era: Tezpur University VC demits office

Tezpur, May 22: Tezpur University fraternity on Saturday organized a thanksgiving ceremony to bid adieu to Prof. Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri on completion of his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of the University. Prof. Chaudhuri, who is Tezpur University’s longest serving VC till date, joined the university on May 21, 2007 and served the university for full two terms. The TU community on his last working day in the university presented Prof. Chaudhuri a memento, a scroll and handed over all the retirement benefits, a tradition started during Prof. Chaudhuri’s tenure of giving employees retirement benefits on their last working day.

A dymic administrator and an outstanding achiever in the field of research and academics, Prof. Chaudhuri, before joining Tezpur University, had also served in IIT, Guwahati as Dean, Research and Development prior to which he was the Head, Department of Chemistry, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong. He has also been associated with a number of professiol/tiol-level bodies and societies.

As the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Chaudhuri played a crucial role in guiding the university to new heights. Under his leadership, Tezpur University received a number of awards and accolades. Most notably, the university bagged the annual Visitor’s Award for the ‘Best University’ in 2016, ranked 5th in NIRF ranking in 2016 and appeared in the list of top 800 universities of the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The university also ranked 34th in the Generation Y category that comprises universities established between 1986 and 1999 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The university was also accredited with ‘A’ Grade by the tiol Assessment and Accreditation Council (AC) during his tenure.

Tezpur University Students’ Council (TUSC) too organized a thanksgiving programme for Prof. Chaudhuri. A farewell meeting was organized by the teaching community of the university where teachers acknowledged his contribution in the higher education are for the country.

Prof. Madan M. Sarma, the senior most faculty member of the University, currently teaching at the Department of English and Foreign Languages, has taken charge as the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university till a new VC is appointed by the Visitor, i.e. the President of India.
