Dibrugarh, Dec 21: The 29th central session of Sodou Axom Matak Sanmilan (SAMS) and Sodou Axom Matak Yuva-Chatra Sanmilan (SAMYCS) and the 5th bi-annual session of Sodou Axom Matak Mahila Parishad (SAMMP) kicked off on Thursday at Chowkidinghee Field, Dibrugarh.

The event began with the flag-hoisting ceremony which was followed by paying rich tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their life for the cause of the community. Speaking on the occasion, president of SAMS, Chandra Sepati impressed upon the gathering that the Matak community was largely underprivileged, and as such, every member of the community must work towards its uplift.

Sepati, however, admitted that a significant change in the condition of the community could not be achieved by working in isolation, and therefore appealed to the people across all religions and castes to extend their help. Underscoring the current sorry state of the Matak community, joint secretary of the reception committee, Mintu Borpatra mentioned the rich history of the community under the Ahom dysty, and expressed his sheer disappointment over the status quo. He asked the Matak people to reclaim their leadership role in the affairs of the State, rather than be a mute spectator to the happenings around them.
