Handcuffed accused escapes from police custody

MANGALDAI, April 3: A person in police custody with handcuffs in his hand maged to escape from Mangaldai Civil Hospital. Acting on a tip-off of possible fincial deal for a rhino horn, Darrang Police on Monday night laid a trap engaging  police in civil dress in the guise of buyers to make a deal with the poachers at village Silbori adjacent to Orang tiol Park and Tiger Reserve under Dalgaon police station. However, the gang of poachers attacked the police team causing injuries to three policemen, mely Matleb Ali, Hemanta Kalita and Ainul Haque. The additiol police team led by Mohan Mee (IPS on probation) and Deputy Superintendent of Police Amit Kr Hojai immediately retaliated and bbed one of the gang members, mely Hatem Ali (28). The injured policemen and the accused were first brought to Kharupetia Primary Health Centre and then to Mangaldai Civil Hospital in the midnight.

The accused Hatem Ali was admitted in the male surgical ward of the Civil Hospital under strict police vigilance with handcuff in his hand while being tied to the hospital bed. However, in the wee hours Hatem Ali freed himself of the handcuff and maged to escape from the hospital.

Meanwhile, Darrang Superintendent of Police Sreejith Thiraviam, while talking to media persons over phone, did not rule out lapses on the part of police and assured to b the absconder within a very short time. “turally there are some lapses on our part. But the absconding crimil will be bbed very soon. We have also identified the crimils involved in the attack on the police and they will also be booked soon and we have already registered a case,” said the Darrang Superintendent of Police.
