Kerber beats Vinci, to meet Wozniacki in semis

New York, Sept 7: Germany’s Angelique Kerber rolled to her 7-5, 6-0 victory over Italy’s Roberta Vinci, advancing to the US Open tennis women’s singles semi-fils.

The 28-year-old German player took control over the proceedings here on Tuesday in the second set, domiting Vinci with a strong baseline game and preventing the Italian from holding serve, reports Xinhua.

Vinci, World No.8, was uble to match her 2015 dream run at this year’s US Open.

Last month, Kerber won the silver medal in singles at the Olympic tennis tourment in Rio de Janeiro.

Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig beat Kerber 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the women’s gold medal match.

Kerber will take on Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki in the semis.Caroline Wozniacki made it through to a fifth US Open semi-fil by beating injured Latvian opponent Astasija Sevastova 6-0 6-2 at Flushing Meadows.

Sevastova needed heavy strapping on her right ankle after falling awkwardly in only the second game.

The decisive moment of the second women’s quarter-fil came as early as the second point of game two, when Sevastova moved to her right and tumbled over while trying to make a service return.

By the time the trainer returned at 6-0 3-0, she had won just 15 points.

It took 52 minutes for Sevestova, who beat Garbine Muguruza and Johan Konta to reach the last eight, to filly win her first game, but the outcome was never in doubt.

“I tried my best,” said Sevastova. “I don’t like to retire, but Caroline played great tennis. Even if I had no injury, it would be tough to beat her.”

Wozniacki said she felt sorry for her opponent but was looking ahead to the rest of the tourment. (IANS)
