KSU seeks government intervention at Sohra College

SHILLONG, Sept 21: The Khasi Student Union (KSU) South Khasi Hills on Wednesday sought the intervention of Roshan Warjri Minister in-charge Higher and Technical Education on the idequacy of basic necessities and other lacue at Sohra Government College.

The Union had also apprise the matter through a memorandum to then Education Minister RC Laloo on November 3, 2014 however nothing has been done by the department to address the issue till date.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the Minister on Wednesday, M Bynnud president KSU-SKH said, “The Minister in our meting had assured us that she will be taking up this matter seriously and will soon invite officials from the education department to examine the subject matter pertaining to the college.”

Stating that it is the only and oldest college in Sohra established in 1982, he said, “The people are facing lots of difficulties especially those coming from poor and underprivileged families. If their son or daughter can’t get admission in the college they have to send their children to Shillong in which they have to undertake extra expenditure.”

The Union has also demanded the state government to immediately introduce other stream besides Arts, like Science and Commerce in the college.

Informing that the current strength of the college is 920 students, he said the number of students has also increased manifold in recent years and in the next five years this number will quadruple therefore there is a need to upgrade and construct more building since the existing classroom cannot accommodate the required strength of the present and future enrollment.

Observing that the condition of the college building is the most important agenda which may put lives of the students and teaching faculty at risk, he said, “The government should also look into this especially with the frequent tremors that rocks the state.”
