Lions Club celebrates installation day

Silchar,  July 10: The   Installation Ceremony of the new board of directors of Lions Club of Silchar Central under Lions Club Intertiol district 322D was held on Wednesday in the celebration complex at Goldighi mall of this town. The PMJF Sangeeta Jatia, former intertiol director was the chief-guest of the well organized function. Swami Shadhandaji Maharaj of Bharat Seva     Ashrama Sangha and Niharendra rayan Thakur, chairman, Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) was the special guest of honour on the occasion.

The programme began with the felicitation of the distinguished guests by the Club members which was followed by a one minute invocation for world peace. Outgoing president Anshu Kumar Roy welcomed all the distinguished guests and invitees. Awards were given to the notable persons for their achievements in their own are. Budding sportsman Monjil Choudhury who represented Assam in the quarter fils of U-17 60th tiol Squash Championship held at Cheni in the year 2014-15 was felicitated by the Club.

Meritorious students were also provided with fincial assistance to further their education. A cheque of Rs.50 lakh by Rosekandy Group was handed over to Swami Shadhandaji Maharaj on the occasion. The club members also presented a cheque of Rs.1,20,000 to Disha Foundation, an organization which works for the welfare of physically disabled children.

In the ceremony, Lion Mridul Choudhury and Lioness Neeru Sharma were installed as the president of the Club for the year 2015-16. Speaking on the occasion, the outgoing presidents Lion Anshu Kumar Roy and Lioness Anuradha Chakborty gave details about all the activities undertaken by the Club during the year 2014-15. The incoming president Lion Mridul Choudhury   briefed on his vision for the year 2015-16 and requested the Club members to support and join him in his endeavor to work for the community.

Choudhury said, “I would like to thank all the members of my home Club for bestowing their faith and confidence in me to lead the Club as its president for the year 2015-16. Over the years, our Lions Club has established itself as a remarkable Club.  Though it is an honour to lead the Club as its president, it is also very much challenging. I hope, with the help and cooperation from all my fellow Club members and well-wishers, I shall be able to discharge my duties in a meaningful manner and lead the Club to greater heights.”

Choudhury also said, “I joined the club way back in the year 1994 to contribute to the development of the society. This year the theme of Lions Club Intertiol is ‘Dignity, Harmony and Humanity’. It is possible only when we give our best to address the various problems faced by our society and the downtrodden community. Lions Clubs Intertiol is the world’s largest service club organization. It has more than 1.4 million members in more than 45,000 clubs across the world in more than 200 countries. Lions have a dymic history. Founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones, we are best known for fighting blindness, but we also volunteer for many different kinds of community projects including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry and aiding seniors and the disabled. By conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of various eye diseases, Lions work toward their mission of providing vision for all.”

Incoming president Lioness Neeru Sharma also speaking on the occasion, said that she would try her best to help the poor and needy people during her tenure. Mridul Choudhury also thanked the outgoing president Anshu Kumar Roy for the wonderful work done during the last year 2014-15. He also assured the gathering that he would try his level best to live up to the expectations of the Club members and the community in discharging his duties. Others who spoke on the occasion included Sangeeta Jatia, Swami Shadhandaji Maharaj, Niharendra rayan Thakur and Arindom Bhattacharjee.
