Silchar,Dec 26: The fil ceremony of the 4th Major Ashish Kumar Roy Memorial Badminton Championship 2016-17 was held on December 24. A number of good and professiol players came from Guwahati, Sivasagar, Manipur, Aizwal and Barak valley. The reputation of this championship is increasing with every passing year and it is envisioned that more professiol senior players from the northeast will come next year. Major Ashish Kumar Roy Foundation (MAKRF) has also conferred the title of Technical Advisor to Shri Prasanta Choudhury, District Sports Association, badminton coach for his outstanding contribution in the organization of the event from the last 3 years.
This year’ champions were Subho Dey who came from Guwahati, and after seeing the plight of children's suffering from cancer, doted the part of his winning cash prize for their treatment in the Cachar Cancer Hospital, Silchar. MAKRF appreciated his humane gesture very much. Winners of women's singles event were Rumi Sinha, and runner Sudipta Sinha. Runners up in men’s single were Bonep Sinha. Amit Saha and Ritabrata Paul were the winners of men’s doubles event while Ra Baruah and Aehshan Kabi Ali ended up as runners up.
The championship is med in memory of a martyr Major Ashish Kumar Roy an Indian Army officer who sacrificed his life in line of duty. Through this Championship the organizers try to promote badminton in the hinterlands of northeast India and identify talents and promote them to higher scale, brotherhood in society and a feeling of tiolism amongst all. Major Ashish Kumar Roy Foundation, Begusarai, whose founding members are friends of Major Ashish, includes Jayand Jha, Santosh Kumar, Kundan Sharma, Kishor Kul, Abhishek Ojha, Sanjay Kumar and Rajeev Kumar and they have been actively involved from the last 4 years in the organization of this championship in collaboration with Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Silchar.
The chief guest on the event was Colonel G. Devan and other guests included, Major Dave, Captain Amit Kumar from Indian Army and Prasanta Choudhury from DSA, Silchar. They were felicitated by Dr R. Ravi Kann, Dr Monoj Deka, Dr Iqbal Bahar and Dr. Piyal g. Litika Vermani and Dr Anuradha Talukdar were the hosts of the award ceremony. Rajeev Kumar, general secretary, Major Ashish Kumar Roy Foundation, Begusarai, sponsor of the championship, concluded the event with a vote of thanks. The effort of the organizing members, Panr Barbhuiya, Amal Dhar, Bidya Singha, Baptu Debroy, Litika Vermani, Dr Anuradha Talukdar, Dr Manoj Deka, Debu Dutta, Partha Sarma, Abhijit th, Dr Piyal, g, Dr Iqbal Bahar and volunteers Sathya, Bimal, Vector Sinha, Bijoy Dhar and Premangshu Ranjan th did a commendable umpiring in the whole event.
