AGARTALA, Dec 7: The capital city Agartala and all the 20 towns across Tripura witnessed hectic political activities throughout the day as the vocal campaign for the municipal election ended at 4 pm today.
Series of processions were taken out by all political parties to impress the voters. The ruling Left Front definitely was far ahead in the show of strength but the opposition Congress and BJP also did not remained far behind. Police sources said the entire campaign process remained peaceful barring sporadic allegation of damaging campaign materials by rival political parties.
The election for Agartala Municipal Corporation, 13 Municipal Council and six gar Panchayats are scheduled for Wednesday next. The State Election Commission said all necessary measures have been taken to ensure a free, fair and peaceful election. The state police and Tripura State Rifles jawans will be deployed on the election day to prevent any untoward incident.
The ruling Left Front and the Congress were the two main contenders in all previous elections in Tripura but this time the BJP’s determined effort to make an inroad in the State’s electoral politics is a special feature for this election. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar was the main face in Left Front’s campaign while the president of the BJP’s West Bengal committee Rahul Sinha and film actress turned politician Rupa Ganguly visited the State to add colour to BJPs campaign. Congress on the other hand, depended on their local leaders like PCC president Birajit Sinha, Leader of the opposition Sudip Roy Barman, MLA Gopal Roy etc.
