SHILLONG, Oct 28: The Northeastern States have been chosen as the perfect place for positive case study on child sex ratio under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’ scheme initiated by the Union Government, disclosed Dr AL Shradha, the Director of ‘Population First’, a trust that stands for gender sensitivity in terms of media reporting and advertising.

The Director of ‘Population First’ also revealed that the Northeastern States stands out in terms of child sex ratio during the census carried out in 2001 and 2011. Although the ratio of girls against the boys in the age group of 0-6 years has slightly decline in the recent past, the census is an indicator that the Northeastern states are the better lot in terms of statistics.

“The North east has 954 to 956 girls out of every 1000 boys which is greater than the tiol average of 914 girls against 1000 boys,” stated Sharadha while informing that the Northeastern states has been taken as a positive case study  when cases of discrimition against the girl child are being constantly been reported in the country.

Quoting the statistics of 2011, Shradha sees little of differences between urban and rural Northeast, a reason that she held as the prime reason to look at the seven sister states as a location to study on gender sensitiveness. In Meghalaya, there are 970 girls out of 1000 boys, Assam with 957 girls of every 1000 boys, Aruchal Pradesh with 960 out of 1000 , galand ,944 out of 1000, Mizoram 971 out of every 1000 Manipur 934 out of 1000 ,Tripura 953 out of every 1000.

Although she said there is a slight fall in the ten years period, the North east is an indicator that the daughters are not considered as unwanted as in other places. “Even as we talk about emergent India we tend to forget about gender sensitivity by ignoring in alyzing the budget cut on Beti Bachao. Beti Padao,” Shradha stated while calling on the Media to play a more active role in providing coverage to gender sensitive issues.

According to her even the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan did not click in many States. There were more boys than girls who benefited. Shradha attributed to the lack of toilets and transportation as one of the reasons that girls could not benefited from the Educatiol scheme.
