Petrol depot firing: Employee succumbs to injuries

MANGALDAI, March 28: Manoj Patel, an employee of Shell Petrol Depot at Aulachowka (Borjamguri) on NH 15 under Mangaldai police station who sustained bullet injuries in the firing by suspected ULFA cadres on Friday night, succumbed to his injuries at rayan Hridayalaya at Amingaon on his way to Gauhati Medical College Hospital. On Friday night, two motorcycle-borne suspected ULFA cadres started indiscrimite firing at the depot causing severe injuries to Manoj Patel. Critically injured Manoj Patel, origilly from Mujaffarpur district in Bihar, was immediately shifted to Mangaldai Civil Hospital and then was referred to Guwahati. Meanwhile, the police have arrested Golok Deka, a petty businessman and a sports organizer of village Howly under Mangaldai police station in connection with the incident.

The police suspect the involvement of hardcore ULFA cadre Bikram Asom in this incident. The police also said that few months ago the banned outfit had demanded a reasoble amount of money from the proprietor of the depot.

Meanwhile, the death of Patel in the hands of the militants has created a feeling of insecurity and panic among the Hindi-speaking employees of petrol depots in the district.
