DHEKIAJULI, Feb 26: The decision of the Central Government to dissolve the Indian Medical Council which was ected in 1956, and to form the Indian Medical Commission, evoked strong protest from the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The IMA started its agitation programme Bharat Yatra from February 25 throughout India. The Dhekiajuli unit of the Indian Medical Association on February 25 took out a long procession through the heart of Dhekiajuli town and reached the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital campus for a protest meeting.
Dr M M Rahman, the secretary of Dhekiajuli unit of IMA, and Dr Manik Roy, physician, Dhekiajuli Health Centre, expressed deep anguish and resentment over the Central Government’s move. The duo said that if the present Indian Medical Council was replaced by the Indian Medical Commission, then the people who do not have medical education or training might become members of the commission and destroy the medical education system in the country. They further added that on March 25, there would be a doctors’ panchayat programme in New Delhi.
