Reservation in promotion: SC to hear case against Tripura

Agartala, Feb 4 : The Supreme Court has fixed February 13 as date for hearing the sensitive case regarding the reservation in promotion and likely to give the fil verdict. Two cases were filed challenging the series of orders issued by the state government during last one month. The petitioners have alleged that the state government has violated an order issued by the High Court striking down the reservation policy followed by the state government.

While issuing the orders the state government followed a reservation policy which the High Court of Tripura earlier said illegal and an apple file by the state government is pending before the Supreme Court. In the controversial policy on the basis of which the state government was giving promotion to the employees belonging to Scheduled Cast and Scheduled tribe considering the back log was termed as discrimitory by the employees belonging to general category.

The General Officers Association filed a case challenging the policy and on April 9,2015 the High Court of Tripura strike down the policy and instructed the state government to follow reservation as per available vacancy.

The state government had filed an appeal against the High Court order before the Supreme Court. The apex court refused to issue a stay on the matter and order to maintain status quo. The state government did not issue any promotion to any of its employees for last one year citing the Supreme Court order. Recently the state government has started issuing conditiol promotion orders that said subject to fil verdict of the Supreme Court.

It invited two fresh cases that accused the state government for contempt of court.
