DHEMAJI, October 20: The project on wood-rotting insects of Yeseng Konwar, student of Class IX of Dhemaji Adarsha High School, was selected for tiol Children Science Congress. Water solution  of hot chilies can destroy the wood-destroying insects.

The State-level tiol Children Science Congress (NCSC) was held at the premises of Dibrugarh University from October 13 -October 16 where students presented their science projects on different topics. Out of 273 projects, 26 projects have been selected for NCSC and Yeseng Konwar, student of Dhemaji Adarsha High School, was selected for NCSC.

tiol Children Science Congress  (NCSC) is a unique, massive and prestigious flagship programme of the Government of India, catalyzed  and supported by the tiol Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to reach out to the nook and corner of India to search for the best science talents with an aim to inculcate a scientific temper and initiate a culture of ratiol scientific exploration among children to seek scientific solutions for common local problems.

Yeseng Konwar is one of such talents who discovered a simple method to get rid of wood-destroying micro-insects (ghun). The water solution of hot chilies sprayed or injected inside the wood will kill the insects. These insects not only destroy wood but also destroy bamboo. These insects are not termites, they are much smaller than termites. In Assamese the insect is called ghun.

This is the first time where more than 150 school children joined in the Dhemaji district-level project competition and this became possible due to the hard work of the district convener Gobind Dutta and academic coorditor Banda Dutta Hazarika. They visited different corners of the district to motivate the students.
