Shillong, July 12: Security forces on Saturday arrested a Garo militant while he was trying to mobilise youths to join a militant outfit. According to police, after receiving information about the presence of militants in the border area of Dangar village in East Khasi Hills district, an operation was launched early Saturday morning. During the operation Vincent T. Sangma of the Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) was caught. Vincent is the self-styled foreign secretary of AMEF and was to take over command after Jack Marak, founder and chief, died in an encounter with police in Garo Hills few weeks back. He was brought to Shillong and has been remanded to 5 days' police custody. "During prelimiry interrogation, it was revealed that he was trying to mobilise the youths of the border area to join the crimil gang," East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Mariahom Kharkrang said. "The district police is committed to ensure that no militant outfits are able to make any inroads into the district. This is a significant operation conducted by the district police," Kharkrang added.
