SHILLONG, April 4: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) M. Kharkrang on Monday urged young students to shy away from social evils and never hesitate, to say ‘No to Drugs’ as he divulged that drug use has particularly risen among young students both boys and girls.
Kharkrang was addressing school students in an awareness programme on Social Evils organized by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Mawlai Circle at St Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School, Shillong.
“Last year we have uncovered that even young boys and girls are consuming drugs and it is very upsetting and also a cause of concern,” he said.
He also encouraged the students to abide by the law and to refrain from drugs.
Enlightening the students on the dangers of drugs, he said, “There has been a rise in crime against property like theft on mobiles, laptops etc.., and all of these crimes are related to drugs.”
He also cautioned the young boys and girls to be wary when being approached by strangers as drugs traffickers tends to use students in uniform to peddle their drugs.
Earlier, O Swer District Health Officer (DHO) said, “Some students after coming out from their schools would loiter around and smoke and chat using foul languages just like street children and this also puts the society in poor light.”
She said Meghalaya has an even higher crime rate when compared to Bihar. The state is also number one when it comes to amount of school drop outs.
According to her, there is an increase in consumption of alcohol among the women population in the state of Meghalaya.
