Silchar, Nov 23: In a bid to bring out an error free tiol Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, district administration of Cachar has taken some concrete and effective steps. A total number of 537 teams have been formed in order to enquire and re-verify some applications which may have to go through it once again. Since the entire exercise is carried out under close monitoring of the Supreme Court, the processes of enquiry and re-verification will be conducted by the District Magistrate (DM) or Deputy Commissioner (DC). “Since it is not possible for a DC or a DM to visit so many houses, we have made 537 teams which will cover the entire Cachar district,” said Dr S Lakshman, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, at a press-meet at his office on Thursday.

“In all cases where further enquiry or investigation and re-verification is required by the DM or DC as per provisions of Citizenship Rules 2003, the team detailed by him or her from the NRC Seva Kendra (NSK) will visit the applicants at their residential address giving adequate opportunity to clear any doubt or provide any clarification. We want to include people in the list. There is nothing to be afraid of it. If needed, one can also check their own mes in the list in their nearest NSK. There are 160 NSKs in the Valley,” said Dr S Lakshman.

Dr S Lakshman further said, “The team will never ask for any new documents or origil documents and they will also carry a Letter For Re-verification (LFR) with them. The letter will stop any unscrupulous person or a team of person to impersote the real investigation officers. The team will assist the DM in all respects. The visits will start from next week and have to be completed much before December 31, 2017. It will be a correction time. It is indeed a positive public process and we want full cooperation of the people. No genuine Indian citizens will be left out from the list,” Dr S Lakshman added to say.

Both ADC B C th and DC Cachar stressed on the point that NRC is a process to include the mes of Indian citizens in the list. It is not for excluding anyone. “Excluding an individual is not the mandate of NRC. One should not be apprehensive. Out of 3.97 lakh, 1.75 application receipt numbers (ARNs) will have to be re-verified. It is a huge task for us and so that we want full public cooperation. I urge upon the people of the Valley to assist the team which will start visiting the houses of the unverified applicants from next week,” said Dr S Lakshman.
