MARGHERITA, November 4: Activists of Satra Mukti Sangram Samity (SMSS) Margherita Regiol Committee on Friday burnt the effigy of State Education, Health and Fince Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma at Block Tiniali NH 38 in Margherita in protest against the minister’s alleged controversial comment that Hindu population in Assam was decreasing and Muslim population was increasing, hence Hindu immigrants should be given citizenship.
Pappu Dutta, president of SMSS Margherita Regiol Committee said that Assam was the land of Srimanta Sankardev and Azaan Pir Fakir where people of different religions and culture lived in harmony but Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s controversial comments might lead to riots. “We warn Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to refrain from making such controversial comments in the future,” said Pappu Dutta.
