TANGLA, June 25: A staggering rise in the cut-off score in undergraduate courses in all the three streams - Arts, Science and Commerce in one of the premier institutions of Udalguri district, Tangla College, has caused concern among guardians and students.

All the subjects in every stream have recorded a high cut-off in comparison to the previous year.

The highest cut-off recorded in Arts was in English touching almost 80 per cent. This was followed by Economics at 63 per cent and Political Science at 55 per cent.

In Science stream the highest cut-off was in Zoology which was 80 per cent, followed by Chemistry with 68 per cent and Botany with 64 per cent marks.

In Commerce stream the highest cut- off was for Magement with 64 per cent, followed by Accountancy and Fince with 40 per cent.

“Higher aggregate percentage scored by students in Class XII boards is the main factor behind this spurt in cut-offs,” said an admission committee member of the college. A total of more than 2,200 applicants were there for admission, where nearly 600 students were considered for Major in a subject. While in Arts stream every subject had 50 Major seats, in Commerce there are 40 Major seats and in the Science stream there are barely 20 Major seats in each subject. Admission to Arts Major seats was held on Thursday and Science and Commerce Major seats on Friday. Another source added that other reason for high cut-off score was that students from across Darrang, Baksa and Udalguri applied in large numbers for a seat in the college.

A faculty member of the Science stream, on condition of anonymity, said that due to small-sized Science laboratory rooms, since long the Major seats intake could not be increased to more than 20.

A faculty member of English added that the high cut-off for English was due to the fact that a large number of applications had come in even from students who pursued HS in Science.
