Tezpur, Sept 30:  While the State Government is striving hard to establish a model State by way of executing various projects and bringing out several stringent laws to eradicate crime from the society, cases of crimes against women has seen a sharp increase in Assam, including Sonitpur district in the past few years.
Sensation prevailed at Rakkhasmari under Dhekiajuli Police station in Sonitpur district on Monday following a heinous act of alleged sexual harassment of a TET teacher of Dhupguri Primary School under Dhekiajuli Education Block.
According to sources, a female TET teacher from Morigaon District had joined service at Dhupguri Primary School under Dhekiajuli Education Block on September 4 after getting appointment from the Education Department on September 3 and she was staying with her mother in a rented accommodation near the school at Bhoiraguri village. Like other days, while she was going to her school, on the way at Bhoiraguri village, a man med Rajen Kura (38) of Bhoiraguri village clutched
her forcefully and used some abusive words and harassed sexually ad infinitum. Facing this awkward situation of sexual harassment, she screamed and on hearing the loud shouts, the local people rushed to
the spot and somehow rescued the teacher from the clutches of the accused.
The local people then severely beat up the man and handed him over to Rakkhasmari Police. Later, upon complaint of the victim, the police arrested the man and admitted him in the hospital but he succumbed to his injuries in the evening. The police sent the body of
the accused to Tezpur Kaklata Civil Hospital for postmortem.
The major dilemma in Assam, when it comes to handling crimes against women, is the fact that there is a lack of understanding and subsequent lack of sensitivity within communities. The lack of education and orientation is a barrier. This can only be fought with proper sensitization.
Teachers’ association of Dhekiajuli Education Block has urged upon the government to take appropriate measures to ensure proper safety of the teachers so that they can render their service in a conducive environment.
