SHILLONG, Jan 28: Defying the Meghalaya High Court ruling on its latest verdict that directed the State government to frame laws that should be in sync with the fundamental rights of the citizens, three opposition parties-UDP, NPP and KHM passed a resolution during the joint meeting on Thursday terming the Court order as ‘intrusion into others domain’.
The Meghalaya High Court in an order recently questioned the source of the authority of the traditiol village councils in the state.
The UDP convened an all-party meeting at the MLA hostel here on Thursday to discuss on the court order where only three political parties attended.
The HSPDP, BJP, NCP, Congress and other parties skipped the meeting. A five point resolution was adopted in the meeting.
“The Court seems does not have any knowledge about its own jurisdiction and power. It intrude into a space where the district councils alone can speak in terms of legislating or empowering the traditiol bodies that found recognition in 1952”, stated UDP leader Bindo M Lanong in a press conference.
Opposition political parties in the state on Thursday criticized the Meghalaya High Court for its alleged “lack of knowledge” about the Constitution of India by recently directing the government to frame laws for traditiol bodies and headmen.
The three parties, already in a loggerhead with the ruling coalition, demanded that that it should not comply with the High court directives.
Further, the meeting also decided to urge the Meghalaya Governor V Shanmugathan to speed up the process of granting his assent to the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2015 passed by the KHADC.
“We have appealed to the Governor to grant his immediate assent to the VAB of the KHADC,” he said.
