'Women empowerment is when women are economically empowered'

Shillong, June 12: Women empowerment is when the women are economically empowered, said IPS officer and Director of the North East Police Academy (NEPA) Dr Doley Burman. The Assam-born officer was speaking at the 2nd General Body Meeting of  ICAR Women’s Cell  and the day-long workshop on “Gender Equality and Women Empowerment” at ICAR Research Complex in Umaim.

She said that women are no lesser than man, adding that “we should have the power to be equal and that respect and equality should start from the home itself”. Burman also emphasized that knowledge of the ected laws and awareness on women rights and privileges will help the women come forward and be at par with the others.

 Bi Kharumnuid, president of Meghalaya United Women Welfare Organization (MUWWO), touched upon the paradigm shift in the mentality and perception of women in the family and said that education alone is the key to women empowerment. She further said that social and economic empowerment will eventually excel the women entrepreneurs locally, tiolly and globally.

Kharumnuid emphasized on the need for more political empowerment of women through representation in legislatures. “This is the only way to give voice to the fairer sex and to strengthen the fight for gender equality through various constitutiol reforms and policies,” she said.

The MUWWO president further stressed that programmes should be strengthened to bring about a greater involvement of women in science and technology. “This should include measures to motivate girls to take up science and technology for higher education and also ensure that development projects with scientific and technical inputs have total involvement of women,” she said.

She appealed the women cell to organize various programmes and meetings to highlights the rights of women, to propagate and show the ways and means to upgrade and solve different hurdles face by the women community within their jurisdiction.
