GUWAHATI: A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar in the early hours of Friday, January 24, 2025, at 12:53 AM IST. The earthquake's epicenter was located at 24.68°N latitude and 94.87°E longitude, with a depth of 106 kilometers, according to seismic data.
The tremors were felt across Assam and other states in India's Northeast region, causing panic among residents. However, there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the affected areas.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, an earthquake of 4.1 on the Richter scale left parts of Assam and Meghalaya shaken on Tuesday, January 21. According to NCS, it occurred at about 12:34 PM IST in the South West Khasi Hills region, at a depth of 10 km.
The residents of Assam and West Bengal had felt the tremors. Many had evacuated from their homes with alarm. NCS had reported that the epicenter of the quake was at 25.34°N latitude and 91.17°E longitude. No reports of casualty had been received. Nor had any heavy property damage been caused.
Months earlier, the NCS had reported that in December 2024, there had been as many as 20 earthquakes in Northeast India out of 44 in the entire country. Interestingly, Manipur had had the highest number of quakes in India during the month with six recorded incidents and five in Assam.
