GUWAHATI: A powerful earthquake of 5.6 magnitude struck Assam on Wednesday morning at around 11:00 AM, with tremors felt across Assam and several other northeastern states. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicentre, located 29 km from Chongdan, Manipur.
The tremors caused panic among residents in Dibrugarh, with many rushing out of their homes. No casualties or damages have been reported so far. Both India and Myanmar were affected by the quake, which highlights the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Meanwhile, two consecutive earthquakes, including one of 5.7 magnitude, rocked Manipur on Wednesday, and the tremors were felt across the Northeast, officials said.
The earthquake of 5.7 magnitude struck the state at around 11:06 am. Its epicentre was located at 44 km east of Yairipok in the Imphal East district, and at a depth of 110 km, according to officials of the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong.
A second earthquake of 4.1 magnitude hit Manipur at 12.20 pm. It struck the Kamjong district of the state at a depth of 66 km, they added. Cracks were seen in several buildings in Manipur following the quakes.
Videos shared on social media showed cracks at a school building in Wangjing Lamding in the Thoubal district where a relief camp for the displaced people affected by the conflict was being run.
