Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has demanded an explanation from the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding an official circular issued on March 6, 2025.
The directive, signed by the BJP’s general secretary under the instruction of the state BJP president, mandates all BJP MPs, ministers, and MLAs to publicly engage with constituents’ via media and social media to disseminate information about the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA), 1978. The deadline for this outreach is set for March 20.
Questioning the intent behind this large-scale campaign, the APCC in a press statement alleged that the directive is causing “doubts, confusion, and fear psychosis” among the people of the state.
“From the contents of the circular and their aggressive push on APFRA, 1978, it is evident that the BJP is biased and determined to implement the Act, despite prior warnings about potential unrest and divisions in the state,” the APCC claimed.
The Congress also pointed out that Chief Minister Pema Khandu had already clarified the state government’s position on APFRA, 1978 in the Assembly.
“If the chief minister has made the government’s stance clear, what urgency has compelled the BJP to issue such an emergency directive to its leaders? Why set a strict deadline of March 20, especially in the crucial month of March?” the APCC questioned. The party has urged the BJP to clarify its position on the APFRA, 1978, and explain the necessity of the directive.
