ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has reiterated that no hydropower project will be taken forward in the state without public consent. Addressing concerns over protests against the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, Khandu said, "If you don't want a dam or a hydropower project, there won't be one. Chapter closed".
Khandu made these statements during a thanksgiving event organized for local legislator and Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing over his electoral victory.
The Chief Minister highlighted that this is not just any other hydropower project, but a Multipurpose Project of national significance, conceptualized by the Government of India and NITI Aayog. He demanded clarification and clarified that misinformation was being circulated to mislead innocent villagers.
According to Khandu, those opposing the project appear uncertain about its specifics, citing varying claims that the initiative involves capacities of "12,500 MW," "11,000 MW," or "10,000 MW." He urged for informed discussions and an end to the confusion.
"This is not even in the pre-initial stage," Khandu said, pointing out the premature nature of the protests. He was also concerned that people were instigating dissent without knowing the actual scope and importance of the project.
The Siang Upper Multipurpose Project has generated controversy in Siang and Upper Siang districts and reflects the greater tension between development and environmental or community concerns in Arunachal Pradesh.
CM Khandu's statements try to comfort the public but also take into account the larger narrative surrounding the state's infrastructure initiatives.
