DIRANG: Dirang sub divisional administration in West Kameng district has issued a prohibitory order meant to protect seasonal habitats of migratory birds within its jurisdiction. The order was issued by Dirang Additional Deputy Commissioner Hage Tarung and Circle Officer Thutan Wangchu after the administration received reports that various people, locals as well as outsiders, were carrying on activities that pose a threat to these birds.

There were apprehensions that people, who were allegedly coming to riverside areas for picnicking and other leisurely activities, might be using airguns, catapults, and firearms that might disturb, hurt, or even kill migratory birds. An order was passed under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 giving the highest degree of protection to the migratory birds listed under Schedule 1, Part 3 of the Act.

The hunting, trapping, or harming of migratory birds is strictly prohibited under the order issued in Dirang. Public cooperation is requested not to cause any form of disturbance to the birds. Offenders will face the full legal ramifications according to the law for violating the order.

Dirang currently has a single black-necked crane that has been in Sangti Valley for nearly a month. Mandarin ducks are also finding refuge in the area. The administration is proactive about ensuring that such migratory species are kept safe and protected during their stay.
