NIRJULI: Nirjuli police, in association with their counterparts in Digboi, Assam, have arrested on 1 February fugitive fraudster Biswajit Bharali (44) from Digboi. The accused had been on the run for the last seven months after duping Rs 46 lakhs and stealing a Mahindra Thar, said Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo.

The case against Bharali started in June 2024 when two complaints were filed at the Nirjuli police station. In the first complaint, it was alleged by a victim that Bharali proposed a superbike garage partnership at Lekhi village, Nirjuli, and convinced him to invest Rs 30 lakhs in its setting up.

Bharali later deceived him of taking another Rs 12 lakhs saying that spare parts were needed and operational expenditure had to be met. Thereafter, the garage was left abandoned and the person disappeared into thin air after receiving the amounts.

In another alleged cheating case amounting to Rs 4 lakhs and theft of a Mahindra Thar, she was said to have decamped. The police got into the deserted garage premises during investigations and found a countrymade pistol, a magazine, and three live rounds of 7.65 mm caliber, attached to the accused.

The law enforcement agency conducted technical surveillance and human intelligence for seven months to trace the movements of Bharali. These operations proved that he was indeed present in Tinsukia district, Assam.

Based on these intelligence inputs, Naharlagun SP Mihin Gambo constituted a special police team led by Naharlagun SDPO Rishi Longdo and Nirjuli PS OC Inspector TM Nekam. The arresting team was led by SI Vivek Linggi with Constables Tadar Tayang and KT Tali who contacted Digboi police to apprehend Bharali.

He admitted to cheating, stealing a vehicle, and illegally holding a firearm. It was also revealed that the Nirjuli SP recovered a Mahindra Thar that he had stolen from another man.

The SP hailed both the Nirjuli and Digboi police for working in coordination to carry out constant operations which enabled them to get the runaway arrested and retrieve all the stolen items.
