Itanagar: The Itanagar Police have successfully apprehended a gang of serial thieves responsible for a series of thefts in the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).

The accused, identified as Chandan Gowala (57), Deepak Sharma (57), and Rakesh (47), were apprehended following a month-long investigation. The gang targeted individuals withdrawing or handling cash, employing deceptive tactics such as dropping fake currency notes or creating distractions.

Itanagar Capital SP, Rohit Rajbir Singh, said that the investigation revealed that the gang operated in the ICR, committing thefts and then fleeing to other states like West Bengal to evade capture. The police team, led by Inspector K. Yangfo, OC, PS Itanagar, with support from other officers, meticulously tracked the suspects using technical surveillance and local intelligence.

The arrests followed the recovery of a Hero Honda Glamour motorcycle with a fake registration number, used by the gang during their criminal activities.

He said on December 9, one Milli Ossen reported a theft of cash from her scooty parked in the basement of V-Mart, Ganga Market. Subsequently, on December 11, another complainant reported the theft of Rs 3,00,000, which was stolen from his car outside the SBI Itanagar branch. The suspects tricked the complainant into picking up fake fallen currency notes while they stole the cash bag.

Further, on October 28, another theft was reported by Dipak Deori, an ATM engineer, of Rs 1,50,000 along with personal documents and valuables while servicing a cash deposit machine at the SBI Main Branch Itanagar. The SP has urged the public to be vigilant, avoid leaving large sums of cash unattended in vehicles, and utilize secure parking spaces. The Itanagar Capital Police remain committed to maintaining public safety and ensuring swift action against criminal activity.
