Itanagar: In a strong push against drug abuse and illegal opium poppy cultivation, the Lohit district administration in Arunachal Pradesh, along with the police and tax, excise, and narcotics departments, organized the second day of a mass awareness campaign in Medo on Friday. The campaign, strategically timed during the opium sowing season, sent a clear warning to cultivators while promoting sustainable alternatives. In his keynote address, deputy commissioner Kesang Ngurup Damo, urged people to completely shun opium cultivation, calling it illegal and socially destructive. He emphasised that progress and dignity cannot coexist with drug dependence and highlighted government-supported livelihood schemes like ANKY, ANBY, and ANPPY. He added that initiatives are underway to link farmers and entrepreneurs with procurement channels such as the Indian Army and ITBP.
