Arunachal Mithun farmers undergo training in scientific husbandry

A 20-member team from Arunachal Pradesh's TAMFWS took part in a three-day training on scientific Mithun rearing at ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, from June 17–19.

Itanagar: A 20-member delegation from the Tani Ao Mithun Farmers’ Welfare Society (TAMFWS) of Arunachal Pradesh, participated in a three-day training programme on ‘Scientific Mithun Husbandry’ at the ICAR-National Research Centre (NRC) on Mithun, at Medziphema in Nagaland, from June 17 to June 19 last.

The programme aimed to enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills in modern and sustainable Mithun rearing techniques.

Dr Girish Patil S, Director of NRC on Mithun, inaugurated the session by briefing the participants about the institute’s ongoing research and support systems. He also interacted with the farmers to understand the ground-level challenges they face.

Dr Stephan Hannah, senior scientist, provided insights into the semi-intensive mithun farming technology and demonstrated farm infrastructure and fodder block preparation.

Course coordinator Dr Narender V N introduced the participants to the basics of scientific mithun farming, while Dr Menaibam Chawang and Imsutenzuk Jamir, both young professionals, conducted practical demonstrations on meat and milk processing techniques.

The training was coordinated and facilitated by Dr Gerik Bagra, ACTO at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar, who also accompanied the team throughout the visit.

TAMFWS President Limi Ete, secretary Kenli Lollen, and other society members actively participated in the training sessions.

On their return journey, the team made a stop at Hasse Rusa village in Longding district, where they met state Agriculture Minister Gabriel D Wangsu.

During the interaction, they shared insights from the training and discussed key challenges encountered in mithun farming within the state.
