ITANAGAR: As part of a major crackdown on cheating, two people involved in two different cases of cheating from Assam and West Bengal were arrested by the Arunachal Pradesh Police, a top police official has said on Sunday.
One of the accused has been named as Debashish Kar, a 55-year-old jeweller based in Naharlagun. Kar had been on the run since August 2024 and was wanted in a jewellery fraud case.
He is said to have stolen gold ornaments from unsuspecting customers claiming he would repair them and then vanished with the valuables leaving behind no trace.
Naharlagun Superintendent of Police Mihin Gambo said Kar evaded arrest for many months by changing locations continuously and using a series of mobile numbers. His activities were spread across different states, hence it was becoming increasingly tough for the law enforcement agencies to locate him.
But through continuous efforts and collaboration with other police forces, the authorities were finally able to lay their hands on him.
Aspects regarding the second Assam arrest remain to be fully revealed, although authorities verify that the two are currently in police custody and additional investigations are ongoing.
