ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh remains a key player in the nation's energy sector, as Chief Minister Pema Khandu declared on Monday that the state had 50% of India's entire hydropower producing capacity. At a formal occasion, Khandu emphasised the potential of hydropower projects to spur economic expansion, projecting that their monetisation may bring in Rs 10,000 crore a year for the next ten years.
In addition to the 12% free power already allotted, the chief minister underlined that the federal government has promised to give the state a 26% ownership stake in every hydropower project. Among the significant projects he mentioned were five hydroelectric projects in Shi-Yomi district, which together have a capacity of 2,626 MW and will help the entire northeastern region.
Along with hydropower, Khandu also announced plans to build tourism along the Yomgo River in Aalo and approved a road project in West Siang that would connect Jirdin and Eyi via Bumri.
Khandu previously visited Silluk Village in East Siang, which has won the Chief Minister's Award for Cleanest Village three times, and opened a Multipurpose Hall and a promenade along the Yomgo River in Aalo. He gave the locals his word that the Mebo Community Health Centre would receive more medical assistance and flood protection measures.
