Itanagar: In a groundbreaking move for financial inclusion, Special Self-Help Groups (SSHGs) for the elderly and disabled in the Rebo-Perging block in the Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh have successfully opened bank accounts under the “Bank Account Kholo Abhiyan” initiative.
The transformative effort covers Mopit, Begging, Riew, Jorsing, and Komsing Kumku villages, bringing essential financial services to the region.
The Rebo-Perging area faces severe challenges, including the lack of shops, markets, medical facilities, and a local bank. This initiative, led by the Social Inclusion and Social Development (SISD) theme under the Arunachal State Rural Livelihoods Mission (ArSRLM), aims to empower marginalized communities by providing access to secure financial systems.
In collaboration with Arunachal Pradesh Rural Bank (APRB) and guided by the Siang district block mission management unit (BMMU) and the district mission management unit (DMMU), the project has opened avenues for economic independence for the elderly and Persons with Disabilities (PWD), an official communiqué informed here on Tuesday.
The success is credited to the dedicated efforts of ArSRLM’s team and other stakeholders.
By physically bringing banking services to these villages, the initiative helps prevent exploitation, promotes secure savings, and encourages participation in local economies. The newly opened accounts enable the Special Self-Help Groups (SSHGs) to manage their savings, access loans, and benefit from subsidies, fostering a sense of dignity and independence.
