ITANAGAR: In a significant legal development, Arunachal Pradesh BJP MLA Ratu Techi, who represents the Sagalee constituency, along with three others, has been sentenced to two years of simple imprisonment by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), SAS Nagar, Mohali, Punjab, in connection with a cheque bounce case under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

The case, filed by complainant Kulwinder Singh Grewal against M/s T K Engineering & Ors, led to the conviction of Ratu Techi, Tara Techi, Julli Techi, and PK Roy. The court also directed the convicts to pay a compensation amount of Rs 2.5 crore to the complainant.

Following the sentencing, the convicts sought suspension of the sentence to facilitate the filing of an appeal. JMFC Abhay Rajan Shukla granted the request, admitting all four to interim bail on personal bonds of Rs 50,000 each. They are required to furnish one surety of the same amount by July 10, 2025. “Since the convicts intend to file an appeal against the order of conviction and sentence… they are admitted to bail… “The order of conviction and sentence is deemed to be suspended until July 10, 2025,” the court stated.

In light of the convicts’ inability to furnish sureties on the day of the verdict, the court accepted personal bonds temporarily. The matter will be reviewed on the next hearing date, when the sureties must be formally submitted.
