ITANAGAR: Naharlagun Police in Arunachal Pradesh have seized more than 500 grams of heroin, 7 kg of cannabis, and other narcotic substances, leading to the arrest of 91 individuals in 2024, under the operation 'Operation Dawn,' according to a police statement.
The operation, launched by Naharlagun Police, aimed to curb drug trafficking and abuse in the region.
The seized items included 588.42 grams of heroin, 7,042.5 grams of cannabis, 48 grams of Lorazepam, and 233.81 grams of Morphine from various peddlers. As a result, 41 NDPS cases were registered, and 91 individuals were arrested. Naharlagun Superintendent of Police, Mihin Gambo, stated, "The efforts led to a noticeable improvement compared to the previous year, as more cases were detected, and stricter action was taken against drug peddlers. These actions also resulted in the confiscation of a significantly larger quantity of contraband substances, demonstrating the effectiveness of the initiative."
The crackdown on drug-related offenses had a broader impact on the region's crime rate. Gambo highlighted a decline in thefts and burglaries, many of which had been linked to individuals struggling with drug addiction. A total of 152 theft and burglary cases were registered in various police stations in the district last year, a sharp decrease compared to previous years.
In addition to law enforcement, the police conducted extensive awareness campaigns across schools, colleges, and rehabilitation centers to educate young people about the dangers of drug abuse. Gambo noted, "The initiatives inspired many individuals battling addiction to seek help and begin de-addiction programmes at rehabilitation facilities."
"Operation Dawn has not only curbed the supply of illegal drugs but also prevented countless young people from falling into addiction. The combined efforts of the police and the community have played a pivotal role in creating a safer and more secure environment in the region," he added. Gambo expressed his gratitude to the residents of Naharlagun for their ongoing support and cooperation. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in the fight against drug abuse and called for continued collaboration as the police prepare to launch 'Operation Dawn 2.0' this year, building on the successes of the previous year.
