ITANAGAR: The Government of Arunachal Pradesh is finalizing all security arrangements for the implementation of the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, where deployment of forces is going to take place from December 15, 2024. The project has been contemplated with an objective to reap the hydroelectric potential that Siang River can provide, representing a step towards regional progress but facing stiff opposition at the local community and by environmental activists.

To facilitate effective implementation, the Secretary (Home) has asked the Deputy Commissioners of Upper Siang, Siang, and East Siang districts and the Director General of Police (DGP) to make available accommodations and logistical support for Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), State Police, and Lady Police contingents that would be deployed for maintaining law and order, securing the project sites, and addressing the probable disruptions.

Three CAPF companies will be stationed in Upper Siang, five in Siang, and one in East Siang, and their deployment will be strategically planned to cover all the strategic locations like NHPC offices and camps. Along with them, State Police and Lady Police contingents will be deployed to ensure an all-round security arrangement. These forces will keep up vigil round the clock, providing 24-hour protection to important sites, including NHPC offices at Boleng and Pasighat.

The DGP has been instructed to station a nodal officer there so that coordination among the district officials, NHPC officials, and the teams of police force can be effective. It is another big leap forward for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, showing that the government is eager to sort out security concerns while making way for infrastructure development in Arunachal Pradesh.
