ITANAGAR: Over 161 students from Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) took to the banks of the Yagamso River today, participating in a large-scale cleanup drive that saw the removal of a staggering 17,280 kilograms of waste from a 1.5-kilometre stretch near Chandranagar.

The initiative, a practical component of the Environmental Science Module-3 syllabus for students across various Integrated Undergraduate Graduate Studies (IUGS) programmes, including BA, BSc, CSE, and BBM, aimed to reduce garbage pollution from the Yagamso and raise public awareness about responsible waste management.

The initiative, part of their Environmental Science Module-3 syllabus, saw the students clear about 17,280 kg of waste across a 1.5-km stretch of the river.

Organized by the Youth Mission for Clean River in collaboration with RGU’s Environmental Science Department and supported by Itanagar Smart City Development Corporation Limited, the drive provided students with hands-on experience in environmental conservation.

The students sorted the collected waste, composted biodegradable materials, and diverted recyclables like PET bottles and dry waste for processing. Multi-layered plastics and other residues were transported to the Chimpu dumping ground.

In addition to the cleanup, the students conducted a door-to-door Information Education Communication (IEC) campaign in adjacent neighbourhoods, guided by YMCR convenor Kanku Kabak. They engaged residents on the importance of waste segregation at the household level and distributed informational materials to encourage greater community involvement in maintaining the cleanliness of the Yagamso River and its surroundings.

Teaching Assistants from RGU’s Zoology Department, Dr Jacob Ngukir, Dr Hage Asung, and Dr Krishnakhsi Misra, guided the students throughout the day. Dr. Ngukir acknowledged the crucial support received, thanking Dr. N.T. Rikam, Registrar of RGU, for facilitating transportation and logistics, and Prof. Santanu K. Patnaik, Director of IUGS, for providing technical guidance and consistent encouragement.
