PASIGHAT: While reiterating their earlier decision to ban illegal means of hunting and fishing in and around the village jurisdiction the Berung villagers have appealed to the general public of East Siang in general and Pasighat in particular to stop fishing using dynamite, electrocution and other destructive means of hunting.

While talking to this reporter on Sunday afternoon, Orin Panggeng president, Berung Yameng Kebang (youth wing of Berung village Council) said that as their village is located near the hunting-prone areas like the Pasighat Reserve Forest, the D Ering Wildlife Sanctuary and the Siang River, the villagers face several problems.

“During the time of the ‘Unying Aaran’ festival (the hunting festival of Adis) some hunters are often found hunting/killing our cattle and taking away their meat and other parts when the hunters do not get any wild animal during hunting,” added Panggeng.

“From the past couple of years we have been reportedly facing this disturbing situation when our cattle (cows and oxen) are killed by hunters at night hours for the meat,” added the BYK leader.

At the time when the hunting festival ‘Unying Aaran’ is round the corner the concern of the villagers is legitimate and obvious as they often face the cruelty toward their cattle by some hunters who do not hesitate to kill cattle of villagers when the hunters do not find any wild hunt.

In view of the Unying Aaran festival, the Berung Yameng Kebang has once again reiterated their ban of illegal means of hunting and fishing.

“We strongly appeal to our people from Pasighat and other villages to stop fishing using dynamite (known as ‘Blast fishing’), electrocution (using inverter/Honda etc) and to also stop using guns during hunting,” said Panggeng.
