Capital Police seize heroin worth Rs 90 lakh in Itanagar

ITANAGAR: The capital police seized a huge cache of heroin weighing around 756.85gm worth Rs. 90 lakh and arrested 21 drug peddlers in a couple of weeks last month within the Itanagar Capital Region (ICR).

Addressing the media on Saturday, Capital SP Jimmy Chiram said that among the 21 arrested, the highest seizure was made from Dimapur-based drugs supplier Jabir Hussain (28) and his accomplice Reena Biswas (29) of 311 gms with a worth of Rs. 30 lakh.

He said this is the largest drug seizure ever made by the capital police in a single case within weeks from various locations in the ICR.

SP Jimmy Chiram said that the operation against the drugs started on March 22, following the arrest of one Jumba Loya of Dokum Colony, Naharlagun wherein the police seized 18.37gms of heroin from his possession. Accordingly, NLG-PS case number 37/23 under US 21(a)/27/27(A)/29 NDPS Act was registered, and a police team under the supervision of SDPO Dekio Gumja was formed.

"Subsequently, the team rooted out the information on the drug supplier from Loya. Thereafter, the police went on to arrest four more drug peddlers from the Baderdewa and Gumto areas with a total of 125.28gms of suspected heroin," he said. He said the police arrested Sanjay Doley (29) from Gumto and Moniram Das (24) and his accomplices Kunal Chetry (26) and Rohit Borah (20) from Bandedewa. Chiram also said that, in a separate case based on intelligence inputs, the police on March 28 arrested one Amir Ali (30), an Assam-based drug supplier who came to supply the drugs at Sood village, Naharlagun.

Case number 13/23 (US 279/336/337/427/353IPC R/W 21(b)), 27/29 NDPS Act, was registered at the Papu Hill Police Station. Thereafter, the police arrested Debojit Mili (22), Habijul Islam (28), and Jabir Hussain (28). The entire groups arrested are from Lakimpur district, except Jabir Husain, who is from Karimganj district in Assam," he said.
